Renewed Focus on STEM

Holy Spirit School has a new initiative to enhance its science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) offering. Already in place is a strong math and science curriculum taught at each grade level and science based extra curricular activities focused on ecology, design, and robotics. A recent grant was awarded to Holy Spirit School to fund improvements in the Science Center, which sparked an idea to strengthen and infuse STEM throughout the school. In order to carry out the initiative a diverse committee with backgrounds in chemistry, engineering, and technology was formed on the school board, and this team will lead the effort.

The vision set forth by the school principal is to increase STEM exposure and opportunities during the school day, through extra curricular activities, and in service projects. One focus is to create more continuity between grade levels in the science curriculum, which will help set a strong foundation. Adding clubs and events that engage students to be technical problem solvers is the next layer of STEM immersion. Specific areas of focus under consideration include coding, aviation, bike repair, biochemistry, outerspace, and 3D printing technology. Other ways that STEM will be highlighted is to add science experiments to the extended care program and to create a builder space where students can imagine, design, build, and test their ideas.
