Curriculum

In 2010 the common core state standards (CCSS) were adopted by the state and implemented at Holy Spirit School . The CCSS created High standards that are consistent across states and provide teachers, parents, and students with a set of clear expectations to ensure that all students have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life upon graduation from high school, regardless of where they live.

In 2013 the NGSS standards were adopted by the state of California and implemented at Holy Spirit School. These standards set the expectations for what students should know and be able to do. The NGSS were developed by states to improve science education for all students. This new interactive approach to teaching science develops the following key skills in our students:

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving
  • Promotes analysis and interpretation of data
  • Connections across science disciplines
Our religion curriculum is centered on the Gospel values taught by Jesus Christ. Each child studies the Catholic Churches’ traditions and teachings. With the strength of the parish administration and parishioners, teachers are able to offer their students a faith-filled spiritual life through participation in a multitude of faith experiences. This rich support allows religion to be infused throughout every aspect of Holy Spirit School curriculum and community life. Each year special academic events are held in a variety of subjects.  The junior high puts on the Science Fair whose winners compete at the diocesan level, with the potential of going onto the state level. The entire school participates in a yearly Spell-a-Thon, the National Geographic Bee, and various other activities focused on student learning objectives. Holy Spirit students participate in a variety of diocesan activities such as the Lillian Black Children’s Art Festival and leadership training for our student council representatives. Individual classrooms often have special events designed to enthuse the students and increase student learning.
